Diagnosing Acid Reflux in Southlake

Symptoms such as chest pain, trouble swallowing, a chronic cough and indigestion are common, and may or may not be due to acid reflux. Here at North Texas Heartburn & Reflux Center diagnosing acid reflux is our first goal. Proper treatment requires a proper diagnosis, and some or all of these tests may be needed in diagnosing acid reflux and GERD in Southlake.

X-Ray Studies

The esophagus and stomach can be viewed on x-ray using a variety of contract materials, allowing the internal anatomy to be well defined. These tests can also help demonstrate the presence of blockages or areas that may not be working properly.

Bravo - 48 hour pH Monitoring

To determine how frequently acid is coming up into the esophagus, a tiny monitoring probe (Bravo) is placed inside the esophagus. It provides continuous information about precisely when acid is present and how long it remains.

Esophageal Motility

Measuring the functional capability of the esophagus is a critically import part of the GERD assessment. This test provides information about the strength and coordination of the muscles of the esophagus, and helps guide subsequent treatment recommendations.

Commonly called an EGD or just a "scope", this direct examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum provide important information about the overall health of those organs. It requires intravenous sedation and is performed in the hospital.
