If the natural opening in the diaphragm enlarges, the stomach and/or other abdominal organs may become pushed up into the chest cavity. This is called a hiatal hernia, and is one of the more common causes of GERD symptoms. When indicated, these types of hernias can be surgically repaired using a laparoscopic approach in most cases.
The LINX® System is the newest innovation for the treatment of symptoms of acid reflux or GERD. A ring of titanium covered magnets is placed around the lower part of the esophagus to augment the function of a weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The procedure is performed laparoscopically with minimal pain and rapid recovery.
These minimally invasive procedures use a portion of the stomach, called the fundus, which is wrapped completely, or partially, around the lower esophagus to enhance the function of the LES.
